Sofia Gamito is Assistant Professor at the Faculdade de Ciências do Mar e do Ambiente (Faculty of Marine and Environmental Sciences), from the University of Algarve, Portugal. She graduated in Biology, at the Faculty of Sciences, University of Lisbon. In 1994 she completed her Ph.D. in biological sciences, in the specialty of marine ecology. She also attended several post-graduate courses on statistical analysis, either about uni or multivariate analysis.
She teaches Fundamentals of Ecology to undergraduate students and Theoretical Ecology to graduate students in marine biology, among other subjects, at the University of Algarve. In recent years she taught cluster analysis and ordination techniques in ecology to students in marine biology and fisheries. She is supervising several M.Sc. and Ph.D. thesis students.
Her main research interests are biological processes, ecological modeling, experimental ecology, and multivariate data analysis. Current research interest is focused on lagoonal ecology and the application of biotic indices and indicator species under the European Water Framework Directive. She has authored more than 40 publications, 18 of them published in peer-reviewed journals. She also serves as a reviewer for several international journals and has participated in 12 national or international projects, related to ecology and management of coastal areas.
